Battery Life That Still Holds Up

Three years in, and the MacBook Air M1 is still posting 13+ hours of screen-on time for regular use. That’s not a fluke. The M1 chip’s 5nm architecture keeps idle and light-load power draw remarkably low, and that efficiency doesn’t erode the way Windows laptop battery life tends to over time.

Apple claims up to 15 hours for web browsing and 18 hours for video playback. Real-world numbers are lower — typically 11 to 14 hours depending on workload. Sustained video calls, heavy browser tabs, anything that pins the CPU will drag it down. For most people working in documents and switching between a handful of apps, 12 to 13 hours is realistic even on a several-year-old unit.

Battery Cycles: What They Actually Tell You

A cycle is counted when you’ve discharged 100% of capacity across one or more charges. The M1 Air is rated for 1,000 cycles before Apple considers the battery degraded — at that point, capacity should remain above 80%. In practice, most units sit at roughly 90% health around the 500-cycle mark under normal use.

Some degrade faster. Chronic top-offs at 100%, sustained heat, and heavy CPU workloads all accelerate decline. Someone who ran their machine plugged in during gaming or video exports, in a warm room, for years can realistically end up with noticeably worse health before 500 cycles. Usage habits matter as much as age.

If you’re evaluating a used M1 Air, the cycle count alone doesn’t give you the full picture. Go to Apple menu > About This Mac > System Report > Power. The number you want is “Maximum Capacity” — the actual percentage of original capacity remaining. Below 80% and Apple would replace the battery; above 90% and the unit is in good shape.

8GB vs 16GB: The RAM Question

The M1’s unified memory is shared between CPU and GPU, and macOS manages memory pressure more aggressively than Windows does. So 8GB genuinely stretches further than the number suggests. Light tasks — browsing, email, documents, casual media — work fine. You won’t notice a ceiling.

Push harder and you will. Thirty-plus browser tabs, local development environments, light video editing: all of these hit memory pressure on 8GB, pushing macOS to page to the SSD. The machine stays usable, but it slows down.

The bigger issue is that the RAM is soldered onto the M1 chip. No upgrade path. A machine you plan to keep for five or more years may feel cramped on 8GB sooner than you’d expect, especially as apps keep growing. If the 16GB variant is within reach, it removes a ceiling that 8GB will eventually hit. If the price gap is too wide, 8GB is fine for genuinely light daily use — just be honest about what your workload actually looks like today, not what you hope it stays.

Is the M1 Air Still Worth Buying?

On the used market, yes — with conditions. Battery longevity alone puts it ahead of similarly priced Windows laptops. Performance holds up for everyday tasks. macOS software support for M1 hardware remains strong.

The 8GB variant makes sense if your budget is tight and your use is light. The 16GB version is the better long-term machine. Either way, check battery health before buying. A unit at 85% health is a meaningfully different product than one at 95%.

If portability isn’t a priority, the Mac Mini M4 is worth considering as an alternative. It starts at ₹59,900 in India with 16GB RAM as standard — considerably more headroom for the money. The obvious trade-off is needing a monitor, keyboard, and mouse on top of that cost, which closes the gap quickly if you’re starting from nothing.

One last thing to ask any used seller: whether Optimized Battery Charging was enabled. It’s a small setting that can meaningfully extend battery health over years of use, and a unit where it was always on tells you something about how carefully the machine was kept.
