Ford Ranger EV on eBay: What You’re Actually Buying and How to Fix It

Ford’s Forgotten Electric Truck

The Ford Ranger EV existed before most people thought American automakers were serious about electric vehicles. Ford built roughly 1,500 of them between 1998 and 2002 — not as a showroom product, but as a compliance vehicle to satisfy California Air Resources Board (CARB) zero-emission mandates. Most went to fleet customers on lease. When CARB relaxed its rules in the early 2000s, Ford recalled the majority and crushed them. The survivors are still trickling onto eBay, occasionally at prices that make EV enthusiasts stop mid-scroll.

These aren’t conversions or hobbyist builds. The Ranger EV was engineered from the factory with a three-phase 90-horsepower AC electric motor, a purpose-built battery pack, and all the control electronics integrated from day one. That’s what makes a surviving unit genuinely interesting: the hardest part of any EV project — integrating the drivetrain — is already done.

What You’re Actually Getting

The Ranger EV is based on the standard compact Ford Ranger body. Externally it’s nearly identical to a gas Ranger of the same era — same cab, same bed, same basic silhouette. Under the hood: no engine, just a motor and its associated electronics. The rear-wheel-drive setup uses a single AC induction motor rated at 90 hp and 167 lb-ft of torque. Not quick by modern EV standards, but adequate for the light-duty fleet work these trucks were built for.

Original range depended on battery chemistry. Lead-acid trucks managed around 30 miles per charge under real-world conditions. NiMH trucks pushed closer to 60–75 miles. Neither is impressive in 2026, but with a modern battery upgrade that number changes substantially.

The Battery Question: Most Important Thing Before You Buy

Lead-acid or NiMH? This is the single most critical question to answer about any Ranger EV listing, and the seller often doesn’t know the answer.

Ford used two battery chemistries across the production run. Early fleet vehicles got 8-volt lead-acid packs. Later trucks — and most of those that made it into private ownership — got nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) packs. The 8V lead-acid cells are no longer manufactured, so replacing a lead-acid pack means sourcing alternatives rather than direct replacements. The NiMH trucks are in a notably better position: limited supplies of tested used NiMH modules still exist through community sources, and more importantly, drop-in LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) replacements have been specifically engineered to fit where the original pack sat.

That LiFePO4 upgrade path is what makes the NiMH truck a more accessible project. Vendors have built replacement modules that mimic the original pack dimensions exactly, so you aren’t fabricating a battery enclosure or designing new mounting hardware — you’re slotting in a modern lithium pack with a known installation path.

Lead-Acid Trucks

The original 8V cells are gone. Owners have converted these trucks to 12V alternatives or full LiFePO4 setups, but the work is more involved. Doable — just a longer, less well-documented path than the NiMH route.

NiMH Trucks

Original packs were rated around 138Ah capacity. An Oregon-based source called Ranger Electric Trucks has maintained a supply of tested used NiMH modules for years. LiFePO4 drop-in upgrades are also available from vendors who have specifically engineered them for this platform. Owner reports describe extended ranges well past 100 miles per charge depending on pack size selected — a meaningful improvement over factory figures.

Why This Works as a First Project

A typical DIY EV build starts with a donor gas vehicle and requires sourcing a motor, designing or purchasing a controller, fabricating a battery enclosure, and integrating all of it safely at high voltage. That’s a long list of decisions with a lot of ways to go wrong. The Ranger EV skips almost all of it.

The wiring harness is already designed for high-voltage DC. The motor mounting is engineered and tested. The BMS integration points exist. The onboard charger — a 6.6 kW unit in later models — is factory equipment. What a dead Ranger EV usually needs is a battery pack, not an electrical redesign from scratch. That distinction matters a lot when you’re new to EV work.

There’s also an active community. The fordrangerev.com site has maintained detailed documentation, technical service bulletins, and battery guidance for over two decades. The DIY Electric Car Forums have live Ranger EV threads. Finding answers when you hit a wall is realistic, which isn’t always true on more obscure platforms.

What to Actually Check in an eBay Listing

Listings vary wildly in how much the seller knows. Estate sales and fleet disposals often come with zero documentation and vague descriptions. A few things worth pinning down before committing:

  • Battery chemistry — ask directly, or look for module count and voltage indicators in any photos the seller posts
  • 12V auxiliary battery condition — the truck won’t wake up without a working 12V system, and a dead 12V is often why a seller thinks the whole truck is dead
  • Main contactor condition — contactors fail over time and can prevent the pack from connecting even if the batteries themselves are fine
  • Onboard charger function — not a dealbreaker if it’s dead, but it affects your total project cost
  • Frame and body rust — these are 25-year-old trucks, and some have lived outside. Check the frame rails and bed floor in photos carefully

A truck sitting with a dead pack is a completely normal condition for these listings. Expected and manageable. Serious frame rust is harder to fix and not always obvious from seller photos.

The Motor Controller: The Risk Nobody Mentions

The Ranger EV uses a proprietary motor controller that hasn’t been in production for decades. Most surviving trucks still have working controllers, but a failed one is a serious obstacle. Used replacements do exist, but supply is shrinking. If a truck won’t power on and the issue isn’t the battery pack or the 12V system, the controller becomes the next line of investigation.

Worth asking about if a seller describes the truck as something that “just needs batteries” — because if it truly just needed batteries, most sellers would have put batteries in it rather than listing it.
