CPU Coolers for the ASUS P5E: What Actually Fits Around the X38 Heatpipes

The clearance problem no one warns you about

The ASUS P5E runs Intel’s X38 chipset, and ASUS wrapped it in an elaborate heatpipe system — copper pipes snaking from the northbridge, past the CPU socket, and over to the I/O area. It looks impressive on the board. It also eats into the space around your CPU socket in a way that most aftermarket coolers never anticipated.

That’s why a cooler with a large mounting ring — like many budget tower units — won’t clip on. The ring hits the chipset heatpipes or the fins connected to them before the retention clips even reach the socket pegs. Not a defect. Just a mismatch between a 2007 board layout and cooler hardware designed for cleaner boards.

What the Q9500 actually needs

Intel rates the Q9500 at 95W TDP. The stock Intel push-pin cooler designed for 65W processors like the E8400 is undersized for it, and after years of thermal cycling those clips are usually worn out anyway. You need something rated for at least 95W.

The extra problem: most modern coolers have dropped LGA775 support entirely. Many that still list it use backplates or mounting brackets that extend outward past the four standard 72mm push-pin holes — straight into P5E chipset territory.

Coolers that actually fit

Scythe Shuriken 2

A strong first pick for the P5E. It’s a low-profile design, 58mm tall with a 92mm fan, and it uses standard Intel push-pin mounting — no oversized ring, no backplate drama. LGA775 is on the official compatibility list, and the flat profile means it doesn’t intrude on fan headers or capacitors beside the socket. Thermal performance comfortably covers the Q9500 at stock speeds.

Noctua NH-U9B SE2

A 92mm tower that explicitly lists LGA775 via the SecuFirm2 mounting system. The bracket spacing matches the 72mm standard Intel hole pattern, so the hardware stays compact near the socket. Noctua also sells LGA775 mounting kits separately for older NH-U9B units that lack the SE2 hardware. Performance is well above what the Q9500 demands, and build quality is about as good as this cooler class gets.

Titan DC-775K925Z Series

If you want something inexpensive and purpose-built for LGA775, Titan still manufactures for this socket. The DC-775K925Z is rated up to 115W and uses a standard push-pin mount, keeping the footprint clear of the P5E’s heatpipes. No-frills aluminium tower — adequate thermal performance, not exceptional — but it handles 95W without complaint and clearance won’t be an issue.

Akasa AK-CCE-7105EP

Another actively sold option, rated at 95W, covering LGA775 and LGA115x boards. Compact form factor, standard mounting, available through electronics distributors including Newark. The dual-socket support is useful if this hardware ever moves to a different board down the line.

What to avoid

Any cooler with a large outer retention ring — particularly one wider than the standard 72mm Intel push-pin pattern — is going to conflict with the P5E’s chipset cooling hardware. The ring hits the copper heatpipes or their fin blocks before you can seat the clips. Budget tower coolers with a proprietary clip ring rather than straight push-pins are the most common offenders.

Tower coolers with backplate-and-bolt systems are hit-or-miss. Some work fine because the top bracket stays compact over the socket. Others have a wide top bracket that reaches into chipset territory. Check the bracket footprint dimensions specifically — not just the heatsink size — before buying.

One installation note

The P5E’s chipset heatpipes make it awkward to reach two of the four push-pin holes once the board is inside a case. Fitting the cooler with the board on a flat surface first is much easier. Line up all four push-pins before clicking any of them down — re-seating a half-locked clip with fingers wedged between heatpipes is a reliable way to crack the socket retention tabs.
