Bitwarden’s Click-to-Fill Default: Why Viewing Vault Items Got Harder and What’s Coming
What changed in December 2024
Bitwarden shipped a major redesign of its browser extension in December 2024. The headline features were a cleaner layout, faster search, compact mode, and a reorganized item view. The more disruptive shift was behavioral: clicking a vault item in the popup now triggers autofill by default, rather than opening the item for review. A dedicated Fill button also appeared on each row to make the autofill action explicit.
For users who regularly reviewed records, copied individual fields, or managed entries that can’t autofill at all — API keys, secure notes, TOTP seeds, custom fields — the change inverted the workflow they’d built around the extension.
Why autofill became the default
The community had been pushing for this. A feature request to make click-to-autofill the default had real traction, and Bitwarden responded to it. The reasoning is straightforward: most of the time you open the extension popup, you want to log in somewhere. One click instead of two made sense for the majority use case.
The problem is that click-to-fill and click-to-view are mutually exclusive as defaults. Whichever one you ship, a chunk of your users will be annoyed.
Who this actually hurts
If autofill always worked and you never needed to inspect a record, you’d probably like the new default. That’s not most people’s reality.
The new behavior adds real friction when you need to:
- Copy an API key, token, or secret stored in a Secure Note or custom field
- Log in to a site where autofill fails, is blocked, or doesn’t apply
- Review a specific field — a recovery code, account number, or secondary password
- Update a record: add a new URL, correct a username, append a note
All of those now route through the three-dot menu, turning a one-click task into three clicks minimum.
Workarounds while waiting for a fix
Use the web vault for anything that needs editing
vault.bitwarden.com gives you full view and edit access without the extension in the way. For managing API keys, updating custom fields, or reviewing records in detail, it’s faster than navigating the popup’s overflow menu. Keep it open in a pinned tab and treat the extension purely as a fill trigger.
Set up keyboard shortcuts for autofill
Bitwarden supports configurable keyboard shortcuts for autofill. If you trigger fills via keyboard anyway, the popup click behavior stops mattering entirely. Most browsers expose extension shortcut settings at their extensions management page — worth configuring once if you haven’t.
The three-dot menu for quick field copies
Clicking the … icon on any item in the popup gives you one-click copy for username and password without triggering an autofill. Not great for multi-field items, but faster than drilling into the full item view when you just need one value.
What Bitwarden has planned
Bitwarden tagged the community feature request to restore click-to-view as “planned” — in their forum system that signals active roadmap, not wishlist. A pull request in the public clients repository (PM-16428) specifically targeted adding a configurable toggle for the primary click action on vault items.
The expected result is a setting that lets you choose whether clicking an item views it or fills it, restoring the old behavior as an opt-in. No public release date has been confirmed.
Until that ships, the web vault is the cleanest path for anything beyond a straightforward login fill.
