VM-3P75CT on a Single-Phase System: Grid Meter, Load Meter, or Both?

One Meter, One Role

A single VM-3P75CT cannot serve as both grid meter and load meter simultaneously. Each unit is assigned exactly one role in VictronConnect — Grid Meter, PV Inverter, AC Genset, or AC Load Meter — and broadcasts data under that role to the GX device. Two roles on one physical unit isn’t possible.

That said, there are real solutions here, and the ET112 comparison is worth unpacking before buying anything extra.

Why the Two Roles Are Actually Different

The grid meter sits at the point of connection to the utility network. It feeds real-time import and export data to the Cerbo GX (or similar), and in ESS mode that data directly drives inverter behaviour — how aggressively the MultiPlus or Quattro charges or discharges the battery. Fast, accurate readings here matter a lot.

The AC load meter watches your loads: what your appliances and circuits are actually pulling. Useful for understanding consumption patterns, but it doesn’t feed into the ESS control loop the same way. That distinction shapes which hardware you actually need.

The Speed Gap Between VM-3P75CT and ET112

The ET112 has a 750 ms polling rate. The VM-3P75CT refreshes at 100 ms. That’s a 7.5× difference, and in ESS operation it’s noticeable. A slow grid meter means sluggish corrections — the system takes longer to respond to sudden load changes and is more likely to momentarily over-import or over-export before catching up.

For the grid meter position, that 100 ms refresh rate is a genuine advantage. For the load meter position, update speed matters far less. That data is mostly informational, not control-critical. An ET112 on the load side is perfectly adequate.

Your Real Options for Single-Phase Systems

Option 1: Two Physical Meters

The most direct path: one VM-3P75CT configured as Grid Meter, and a second device configured as AC Load Meter. The GX device handles multiple simultaneous meters without issue. Ethernet-connected meters appear under Settings → Modbus TCP/UDP → Discovered Devices and need to be manually enabled; VE.Can-connected meters are detected automatically once the bus is properly terminated.

The second meter doesn’t have to be another VM-3P75CT. Since update speed is less critical for load monitoring, an ET112 is adequate and significantly cheaper. One fast meter where it actually counts, one inexpensive meter for consumption visibility.

Option 2: Let the GX Device Calculate AC Loads

This is the option most people overlook. The GX device already knows inverter output power (from the MultiPlus or Quattro directly) and grid import/export (from the grid meter). It calculates total AC loads from those two figures automatically — no dedicated load meter required.

The result appears in the Device List and on the VRM portal under AC Loads. It won’t give you per-circuit granularity, but for most single-phase home setups the calculated figure is accurate enough to understand what the house is consuming. Zero extra hardware, zero extra cost.

If you don’t need circuit-level detail, this is probably the right call.

Option 3: Using the Spare CT Inputs (Why It Doesn’t Work)

On a single-phase install, the VM-3P75CT only uses the L1 CT clamp. L2 and L3 inputs sit idle, and it’s tempting to think you could clamp those onto secondary circuits for bonus readings. The problem is that the meter treats all three CT inputs as phases of one measurement — not as independent monitoring points. Whatever you clamp on L2 and L3 gets reported to the GX device as phase 2 and phase 3 of the grid, not as load data. In a single-phase ESS configuration that can confuse the system’s phase calculations. It isn’t worth it.

Choosing Between the Paths

Need accurate, granular load data — for sub-metering, billing checks, or detailed energy analysis? Add a second physical meter. A VM-3P75CT as Grid Meter paired with an ET112 as AC Load Meter is a practical, cost-effective split.

Just want household-level consumption visibility alongside your grid data? The GX device’s calculated AC load figure handles that with no additional hardware.

Either way, avoid leaning on the spare CT inputs as a workaround. The data lands in the wrong category inside the GX device and can work against ESS behaviour rather than helping it.
