Open on One Side? How to Identify 1mm and 1.25mm PCB Connectors on IoT Devices

The open-on-one-side look is by design

If you’re staring at a small PCB connector with only three walls and one open face, that’s not a damaged part — it’s how these connectors are supposed to look. The board-mounted header (the male side soldered to the PCB) for most fine-pitch wire-to-board series is intentionally shrouded on three sides only. The open face is where the mating plug slides in.

This trips people up because JST’s catalog prominently shows the plug housings — which are fully enclosed — and the open-sided PCB header looks nothing like them. You’re looking at two different halves of the same system, and JST’s site doesn’t make that obvious.

The main candidates at 1mm and 1.25mm

Three connector families dominate this size range in consumer IoT and Zigbee hardware.

Molex PicoBlade — 1.25mm pitch

PicoBlade is the most common 1.25mm connector in small electronics and a very strong candidate here. Available in 2 to 15 circuits, with both through-hole and SMT PCB header variants. Rated at 1A per circuit on 28AWG wire. The board header has that characteristic three-sided shroud with one open face.

Key part numbers: 53947 series for through-hole vertical headers, 53261 for SMT right-angle. The mating wire-side plug housing is 51047. If the header on your board is through-hole and stands upright, 53947 is almost certainly what you’re matching against.

JST GH — 1.25mm pitch

JST GH is also 1.25mm pitch and visually similar to PicoBlade on the board side. It became the standard connector in the Pixhawk/ArduPilot drone ecosystem and appears widely in compact robotics and IoT modules. The plug housing uses a side latch — PicoBlade uses a top latch. That distinction settles most cases if you can find an original plug somewhere on the device.

GH and PicoBlade are NOT interchangeable despite matching pitch. The housings differ enough that they won’t mate reliably across families.

JST SH — 1.0mm pitch

SH is JST’s 1.0mm series, one step smaller than GH. Popular in wearables, compact sensor boards, and some Zigbee devices where board space is extremely tight. Rated at 1A / 50V. SMT board header only — no through-hole variant. No locking latch on the plug.

SH and GH look nearly identical at a glance. The 0.25mm pitch difference is genuinely impossible to detect by eye. You need calipers.

How to measure pitch accurately

Use a digital caliper with 0.01mm resolution. Don’t try to measure a single pin gap directly — the margins are too tight for a reliable reading.

Instead, measure from the outer edge of the first pin to the outer edge of the last pin, then divide by the number of gaps (number of pins minus one). On a 3-pin header: measure across 2 gaps, divide by 2. On a 5-pin header: measure across 4 gaps, divide by 4. Averaging across multiple gaps absorbs small positioning errors.

Target values: a 3-pin 1.25mm header should read about 2.5mm across the outer pin edges. A 3-pin 1.0mm header should read about 2.0mm. That 0.5mm difference is real and measurable — measure twice.

PicoBlade vs JST GH when the pitch matches

Both measure 1.25mm, but their plugs are not interchangeable. Three things to check:

  • Latch position: PicoBlade latches from the top of the plug housing; GH latches from the side. This is the fastest visual check.
  • Housing height: GH housings sit slightly taller than PicoBlade at the same pin count.
  • Contact design: PicoBlade uses a two-point contact per pin; GH uses a single point. PicoBlade also requires a specific crimper — hand-crimping rarely holds long-term.

Top latch means PicoBlade. Side latch means GH. One look at an original plug and you’re done.

Sourcing the replacement plug

Once you’ve confirmed the family and pitch, you need the wire-side plug housing plus either pre-crimped terminals or bare contacts. Three practical options:

  • DigiKey or Mouser: Genuine Molex and JST parts, accurate labeling, reliable shipping. Best if you want certainty on the exact family.
  • AliExpress: Cheap and available in small quantities, but labeling is inconsistent. Anything listed as “1.25mm JST” is usually a GH-compatible clone, not necessarily genuine JST or PicoBlade. Test-fit on a spare header before committing to a repair.
  • Pre-made pigtail cables: One end is the correct plug, other end bare wire. Widely available for all three series and sidesteps the crimping problem entirely — the right call if you only need one or two connectors.

For a Zigbee Fingerbot specifically: the 2-pin header is typically the motor connection and the 3-pin is usually battery or a programming pad, though this varies by production revision. Check your specific board before ordering in bulk.
