Camera Shake Filters in Video Editing: What the Parameters Actually Do

Why jitter presets aren’t the same as camera shake

If your editor only gives you a jitter preset and a stabilizer, you’re being offered two extremes with nothing in between. The jitter — often called “Nervous” or something similar — is randomized noise that doesn’t care about your edit. Stabilizer removes movement. Neither does what a well-crafted camera shake is supposed to do: add organic, controlled energy that sells a moment.

The gap between random jitter and a proper shake filter is mostly about parameters. Once you understand what each control does, you can get close to what editors like Adobe Premiere offer — either through built-in tools you might not have found yet, manual keyframing, or a plugin.

The four parameters that matter

Amplitude

Amplitude is how far the frame moves from its rest position. It’s the most obvious control and the one people reach for first, but cranking it is also the fastest way to make a shake look wrong. A car impact might need only a few pixels of travel. An explosion can go further. Too high and it stops reading as camera shake and starts reading as a mistake.

Frequency

Frequency controls how fast the oscillation runs. High frequency reads as vibration — a motor, a surface, a device. Low frequency reads as a slow sway or a big single jolt. Most preset jitter filters run at a single fixed rate, which is why they always feel like the same kind of shake regardless of context. Separate frequency control is the biggest thing missing from basic presets.

Rotation

Even a fraction of a degree of tilt adds organic weight. Pure translation — moving left and right or up and down with no roll — looks mechanical. Real cameras tilt slightly with every push of the frame. Rotation is often underweighted in presets, which contributes to the synthetic feel.

Decay

This one gets skipped most often. Real shake doesn’t stay constant. An impact peaks on the first frame or two and settles. If the shake runs at the same amplitude throughout, it reads wrong — more like sustained turbulence than a hit. Good implementations let you envelope the intensity over time with either a built-in decay control or manual keyframes.

What DaVinci Resolve actually gives you

Resolve’s built-in Camera Shake effect goes further than the Nervous filter. It exposes X Deviation, Y Deviation, and Rotation Deviation sliders, giving you independent control over each axis. There’s also a speed control and a seed value for reproducibility.

The limitations: no distinct frequency control separate from speed, and no built-in decay envelope. For simple reactive shakes it works. For anything with precise timing — a hit that needs to settle over a specific number of frames — you’ll either keyframe the intensity by hand or reach for a plugin.

Manual keyframing: slow but precise

Every NLE lets you keyframe Position and Rotation. Moving the playhead every 2–6 frames and nudging those values by small amounts — with easing applied — produces a shake you control completely, including the decay. It’s the approach Premiere essentially nudges you toward through its motion effects panel.

In Resolve’s Fusion page you can do a cleaner version of this with expressions. A Transform node driven by a sin() or cos() function with frequency and amplitude as adjustable variables gives you smooth oscillation. Keyframe those variables across time to build a custom decay envelope. More work up front, but you can save it as a macro and reuse it.

Boris FX Sapphire Shake

Sapphire’s Shake effect has most of the controls the original feature request describes: separate Amplitude and Frequency parameters, a Style menu (Normal, Twitchy, or Jumpy), independent random and wave components, and motion blur tied to the shake. Motion blur is a small detail that makes a significant perceptual difference — without it, fast moves can read as a slideshow rather than organic motion.

It runs as OpenFX in DaVinci Resolve, dropping directly into the Edit or Color page. The cost is the main barrier — Sapphire is a professional suite, not a standalone purchase. If you already have it, the Shake effect is worth pulling up before building anything manually.

The After Effects wiggle expression

For editors who round-trip to After Effects, wiggle(frequency, amplitude) applied to Position is a two-parameter shake in one line. Apply a separate wiggle to Rotation at a different frequency and you get X, Y, and rotation independence that most NLE plugins charge for. Keyframe the amplitude value itself to build a decay.

What Premiere actually does

Premiere doesn’t ship a first-party Camera Shake effect with dedicated creative parameters. When editors reference Premiere’s shake, they usually mean one of two things: manually keyframed Position and Rotation values (the same approach that works in any NLE), or a third-party preset pack applied as a motion effect. Some preset packs use nested sequences to deliver polished multi-axis shakes — but you’re picking a preset, not tuning parameters. The “customizability” is mostly choosing a different preset.

The parameter set people associate with Premiere — intensity, frequency, rotation, directional bias — is reachable in Resolve. It requires more manual setup or a plugin to get there cleanly, but nothing about it is exclusive to Premiere.
