Sent Money to the Wrong Account on PhonePe or Paytm? Here’s How to Get It Back

You probably cannot force a refund — but you can improve your odds a lot

UPI transfers, once processed, are final. PhonePe, Paytm, and every other UPI app are just rails on top of the banking system — they cannot pull money back unilaterally. The only real path to recovery is getting the recipient to return it voluntarily, or getting banks and NPCI to apply enough pressure that they do. That said, acting fast and following the right escalation order does work in a meaningful number of cases.

Step 1: Report it inside the app — immediately

For PhonePe, open the app and go to Transaction History. Tap the transaction in question, then tap Help and select “Report a Problem.” Choose the wrong transaction option. This lodges a formal complaint with PhonePe’s dispute team and starts the clock on their resolution timeline.

For Paytm, open your transaction history, select the specific transfer, and use the “Need Help” or support option to report it as a wrong transaction.

Speed matters here. The sooner you report, the better the chance the recipient’s bank can flag the funds before they’re withdrawn or spent.

Step 2: Call your bank directly

Don’t rely only on the app. Call your bank’s customer care and tell them: “I made a wrong UPI transfer and need to raise a dispute.” Have the transaction ID, amount, date, and the UPI ID or phone number you sent to ready before you call.

Your bank contacts the recipient’s bank and formally requests a reversal. They typically take 7–15 working days to attempt resolution. Get a written complaint reference number — you’ll need it to escalate further.

Step 3: Escalate to NPCI if your bank doesn’t resolve it

NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) oversees all UPI transactions in the country. If 7–15 working days pass with no resolution from your bank, take the complaint directly to NPCI.

  • Toll-free helpline: 1800-120-1740 (24×7)
  • Email: [email protected]
  • Online: npci.org.in → Register a Complaint

NPCI typically resolves logged complaints within 3–5 working days. Keep your UPI transaction reference number and your bank’s complaint reference number handy when you contact them.

Step 4: RBI Integrated Ombudsman — last resort, but effective

If 30 days pass and neither your bank nor NPCI has resolved it, file with the RBI Integrated Ombudsman. As of July 2026, the Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme (RB-IOS) 2026 replaced the older 2021 version with stronger consumer protections and a faster process.

  • File via the CMS portal at cms.rbi.org.in — it costs nothing
  • The “One Nation One Ombudsman” model routes your complaint automatically; you don’t need to find a specific regional office
  • Awards can reach up to ₹30 lakh for consequential losses, plus up to ₹3 lakh for harassment and time spent chasing the issue

RBI also mandates ₹100 per day compensation from banks for delays beyond their prescribed turnaround time. A bank that ignores a complaint long enough becomes financially liable for the delay itself.

The hard truth about recipient cooperation

None of these steps can legally compel a stranger to hand money back if they decide to keep it and the banks cannot freeze or reverse the transfer outright. Civil court is technically an option, but for smaller amounts it’s rarely worth the time or cost.

What the escalation path above does is create genuine pressure. NPCI and bank complaints get the recipient’s bank involved in ways a direct phone call never does. That pressure converts into voluntary returns far more often than doing nothing.

Watch out for fake helpline numbers

Searching for “PhonePe customer care” or posting about a wrong transfer in public forums attracts scammers who drop fake support numbers in comments and replies. These numbers exist specifically to steal more money from people who are already panicking.

Use only the in-app Help section or your bank’s official printed number. Never call a number from a forum post, a WhatsApp message, or a social media comment. PhonePe’s legitimate support channel is through the Help section inside the app and their official website. NPCI’s verified toll-free number is 1800-120-1740.
