Sent Money to the Wrong Account on PhonePe or Paytm? Here’s How to Get It Back
If you sent money to the wrong UPI account, act immediately
The most important thing to understand first: UPI payments settle instantly. Nobody — not PhonePe, not Paytm, not your bank, not NPCI — can reverse a completed transaction on their own without the recipient’s consent or a court order. What you can do is file the right complaints in the right order so you have the best legal leverage to recover your money.
Step 1: Raise a dispute inside the app right now
Don’t call a helpline first. Open PhonePe or Paytm, find the transaction in your history, and tap it. Look for a “Raise a Dispute” or “Help” option — on PhonePe this is usually under the transaction detail screen. Select something like “Transferred to wrong account” and submit the complaint.
Have your UTR (Unique Transaction Reference) number ready. It’s on the transaction receipt and you’ll need it at every step that follows. Filing inside the app creates a timestamped, logged complaint that both PhonePe/Paytm and NPCI can trace. That paper trail matters legally.
PhonePe’s verified customer care
If the in-app route isn’t resolving things, PhonePe’s genuine customer support numbers are +91 80 6872 7374 and 022-68727374. Email: [email protected]. The in-app complaint is still faster because it auto-generates a reference number tied to your account.
Step 2: Notify your own bank
Call your bank’s customer care and report the wrong transfer. Give them your UTR number, the amount, the date, and whatever you know about the recipient — their UPI ID or registered phone number. Your bank is required to forward a recovery request to the beneficiary bank.
The beneficiary bank will then contact the unintended recipient directly and request a voluntary return of the funds. This step resolves the majority of cases — when a bank calls and explains the situation formally, most people return the money. The process also moves faster when both parties bank with the same institution.
Step 3: File a complaint with NPCI
If a few days pass and neither the app complaint nor your bank has produced results, escalate to NPCI — the National Payments Corporation of India, which operates the entire UPI network.
- Go to the NPCI website and navigate to UPI → Dispute Redressal Mechanism → Complaint → Transaction
- Select “Incorrectly transferred to another account”
- Enter your UTR, transaction date, amount, bank name, and contact details
- Submit and save the Complaint Reference Number (CRN) for tracking
NPCI’s toll-free helpline is 1800-120-1740. Clear-cut cases typically resolve within three to five working days. More complicated disputes can take longer.
Step 4: The RBI Integrated Ombudsman
If thirty days have passed since your original complaint to the bank or the payment app and nothing has moved, escalate to the Reserve Bank of India’s Integrated Ombudsman. This scheme — operational since November 2021 — covers banks, UPI payment service providers like PhonePe and Paytm, and NBFCs under one unified grievance system.
- File online at cms.rbi.org.in
- Email: [email protected]
- Toll-free helpline: 14448 (available in Hindi, English, and 10 regional languages)
There is no fee to file. The Ombudsman has actual authority to direct regulated entities — this isn’t just another complaint box. Your complaint must be filed within one year of the bank’s reply, or within one year and 30 days from the date of your original complaint if you never received a reply.
What if the recipient flat-out refuses?
If the recipient knows the money was sent by mistake and is refusing to return it, the matter becomes legal. Section 72 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872 is the foundational provision: money received by mistake must be returned. If the recipient deliberately withholds or withdraws the funds after being formally notified, you can file a police complaint under Section 314 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for dishonest misappropriation. A civil suit under the Code of Civil Procedure is also available for recovery.
Most cases never reach this stage. The bank-mediated contact resolves the vast majority.
A serious warning about fake helpline numbers
Fake “customer support” numbers for PhonePe and Paytm are all over social media, forum threads, and SEO-stuffed websites. Calling these numbers frequently results in further fraud — callers are asked to share OTPs, install remote-access apps, or pay a “processing fee” to unlock the recovery. None of these requests are real.
PhonePe’s genuine support is inside the app or at +91 80 6872 7374 / 022-68727374. NPCI’s real helpline is 1800-120-1740. The RBI Ombudsman can be reached at 14448 or cms.rbi.org.in. Treat any other number with suspicion.
