Money Sent to Wrong UPI Account on PhonePe or Paytm? Here’s How to Get It Back

UPI transactions don’t have an undo button

Once money leaves your account via PhonePe or Paytm, it settles immediately. There’s no automatic reversal built into UPI. What you can do is file a formal dispute — and speed matters, because your options get narrower the longer you wait.

Step 1: Report Inside the App First

Don’t call anyone yet. Open the app, find the wrong transaction in your history, and tap it. Both PhonePe and Paytm surface a help or dispute option directly on the transaction screen. That’s your starting point.

On PhonePe

  • Open the app and go to History
  • Tap the transaction you want to dispute
  • Tap “Need Help?” or the help icon
  • Choose “Report a Problem” and select the wrong-transfer reason
  • Submit and save the complaint reference number you get

On Paytm

  • Open Paytm and go to Passbook
  • Tap the transaction in question
  • Select “Raise a Dispute” and describe what happened
  • Submit and note your case reference number

That reference number is not optional — you’ll need it for every follow-up call and every escalation.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Getting the Money Back

The recipient. That’s what determines whether you recover anything.

Under India’s UPI framework, a completed payment is treated as settled. PhonePe, Paytm, and your bank cannot pull money out of someone else’s account without their agreement — or a court order. If the person who received your payment is willing to return it, the process moves quickly. If they refuse, you’re in formal dispute territory, which is slower and has no guaranteed outcome.

This is not a limitation of any one app. It’s how UPI works at the NPCI level.

Step 2: Contact Your Bank

After the in-app complaint, call or visit your bank and ask them to raise a reversal request against the beneficiary’s bank. Have these ready: transaction ID, date, amount, and the recipient’s UPI ID or account number.

Your bank will flag the receiving account and formally request the funds back through NPCI’s inter-bank dispute mechanism. Under RBI guidelines, banks are required to acknowledge and act on such complaints within defined timelines.

Step 3: Escalate to NPCI

NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) oversees all UPI transactions in the country. If the app complaint and bank request aren’t moving, take it directly to them.

  • Toll-free helpline: 1800-120-1740 (available 24/7)
  • Email: [email protected]
  • Online: Visit the NPCI official website, go to the UPI section, click Complaint, and select “Incorrectly transferred to another account”

You’ll need the transaction ID, both account details, the date, and the transfer amount. NPCI typically responds within 3 to 5 working days.

Step 4: RBI Integrated Ombudsman — the Last Resort That Actually Works

If 30 days pass without a satisfactory outcome, file at cms.rbi.org.in under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme. It’s free. Banks take Ombudsman complaints seriously because they face formal obligations and potential penalties for delay or inaction.

The Ombudsman can direct your bank to compensate you for the financial loss, and in some cases for mental agony and delay costs too. This route takes one to three months but it’s the strongest formal lever available to you outside of court.

About Fake Customer Care Numbers

Scammers post fake helpline numbers specifically targeting people who’ve already lost money in a wrong transfer. They’ll ask for your OTP, UPI PIN, or remote phone access — and you’ll lose far more than the original amount.

PhonePe’s verified helpline numbers are 080-68727374 and 022-68727374. Paytm support is best reached through the app or Paytm’s official website. Any number shared on a forum, WhatsApp group, or social media post should be verified against the official app before you dial it.

Quick Reference

  • File a dispute in the app immediately — get your complaint reference number
  • Contact your bank and ask for a reversal request against the beneficiary bank
  • Escalate to NPCI at 1800-120-1740 or [email protected] if there’s no progress
  • File with the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in if 30 days pass without resolution
  • Never call helpline numbers found on social media — use only the official app or website
