Sent Money to the Wrong PhonePe or Paytm Account? Here’s Exactly What to Do
If you sent money to the wrong account, act within the first hour
UPI transactions are instant and irreversible at the network level — the money leaves your account the moment you tap Send. That does not mean it is gone for good. Banks and NPCI have a formal dispute process, and the faster you move, the better your odds of getting it back.
Step 1: Note down the transaction details immediately
Before anything else, open PhonePe or Paytm and screenshot the transaction. You need the exact transaction ID, the recipient’s UPI ID or phone number, the amount, and the timestamp. Every step that follows will ask for these.
Step 2: Try reaching the recipient directly
If you recognise the UPI ID or the name on the payment screen, call or message the person. Explain the mistake calmly and share your transaction reference. A surprising number of accidental transfers get resolved this way, sometimes within minutes. If they agree to return it, ask them to do a fresh transfer back to you. Do not share any OTP or PIN to “help” them process it — no legitimate reversal works that way.
Step 3: Raise a dispute inside the app — this is the most important step
In PhonePe, open the transaction from your history, tap Need Help?, then select Wrong Transfer. Paytm has a similar path under Raise a Dispute. Submit the complaint with your transaction ID and a brief, factual description of what happened.
This creates a timestamped record in the official dispute queue. The app’s team can then contact the recipient’s bank and formally request a voluntary reversal. If both accounts happen to be at the same bank, resolution tends to be noticeably faster.
Step 4: Notify your bank directly
At the same time — not after — call your bank’s customer care or visit a branch. Report an erroneous UPI transfer and hand over the transaction details. Your bank can formally request a chargeback from the beneficiary bank. Get a written complaint reference number and keep it.
Step 5: Escalate to NPCI if a few days pass with no result
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) regulates UPI and has its own dispute channel. Their toll-free number is 1800-120-1740, available 24×7. You can also file online through their portal — choose the category Incorrectly transferred to another account and submit your transaction ID. NPCI can put pressure on both banks in a way that app-level complaints sometimes cannot.
Step 6: RBI Ombudsman as a last resort
If 30 days have passed and nothing has moved, escalate to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in. It is free to use. Upload all previous complaint records — reference numbers, screenshots, email threads — because the ombudsman will want to see that you went through the proper channels first.
Fake helpline numbers: a real risk
Search for “PhonePe customer care” and you will land on dozens of unofficial numbers. Many are scam lines, set up specifically to extract your OTP or card details under the guise of processing a reversal. The verified PhonePe number is 080-68727374. Paytm’s official helpline is 0120-4456-456. Anything else is suspect.
A real support agent from either platform will never ask for your UPI PIN, OTP, or full card number. If a call goes that direction, hang up and report it through the app.
Will you actually get the money back?
Honest answer: it depends. There is no automatic recall mechanism in UPI — the recipient has to cooperate, or a bank or court has to compel them. Your odds improve significantly when you act fast, the amount is relatively small, and the receiving bank is responsive to chargeback requests.
For larger sums where the other party refuses to budge, a consumer forum or civil court complaint may be the remaining option. Under Indian law, holding money received by mistake is considered unjust enrichment, which gives you legal standing to pursue it.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a UPI wrong transfer refund take?
When the recipient agrees to return the money voluntarily, it can settle in 24–48 hours. Bank-initiated chargebacks typically take 5–7 working days. NPCI-level cases can stretch longer, depending on how quickly both banks respond.
Can PhonePe or Paytm reverse a payment on their own?
No. These apps are payment facilitators, not banks. They can flag a transaction and open communication between the two banks involved, but the actual reversal happens at the banking level and requires either the recipient’s consent or a formal bank directive.
What if the recipient refuses to return the money?
File the in-app complaint anyway — it creates a timestamped paper trail. With that record, you can approach a consumer forum or civil court. The complaint timestamp matters: it shows you acted promptly and in good faith.
