Sent Money to the Wrong Account on PhonePe or Paytm? Here’s How to Get It Back
Sent to the Wrong Account on PhonePe or Paytm? Act Fast
UPI transactions complete in seconds, and once the money lands in someone else’s account, the platform cannot simply pull it back. That is the frustrating reality. But there is a real path to recovery — it just requires moving quickly and following the right steps in order.
First: Check That Helpline Number
Fake helpline numbers circulate constantly — in forum posts, WhatsApp forwards, comment sections. Before calling any number you saw posted somewhere, verify it on the official app or website. PhonePe’s official support numbers are 080-68727374 and 022-68727374. Paytm support is best reached through the Help section inside the app itself. Calling an unofficial number can make a bad situation significantly worse — scammers pose as bank or app representatives to extract your OTP or account details.
Step 1: Raise a Dispute Inside the App
Do not call first — go to the app. Both PhonePe and Paytm let you open a dispute directly from your transaction history, which creates a formal complaint record instantly.
On PhonePe:
- Open the app and tap History
- Select the wrong transaction
- Tap “Need help?” or “Contact PhonePe Support”
- Choose the issue type and submit your complaint
On Paytm:
- Open the app and go to Payment History
- Find the transaction and tap Raise a Dispute
- Describe the issue and submit
Save the complaint reference number. Every escalation step after this will ask for it.
Why the Bank Cannot Just Reverse It
UPI payments are irrevocable by design. The moment money arrives in the recipient’s account, it belongs to them legally. Your bank or PhonePe cannot debit that person’s account without their consent — or a court order. What the dispute process actually does is formally ask the recipient’s bank to contact them and request a voluntary return. Most legitimate accidental transfers do get resolved this way, but it requires cooperation.
Step 2: Tell Your Bank
Call your bank’s official helpline or visit a branch. Report the erroneous transfer and provide the transaction ID, date, amount, and the UPI ID you sent to by mistake. Ask for a written acknowledgment with a reference number.
Time matters. Reporting within 24–48 hours of the transfer gives you the best shot at a quick resolution.
Step 3: Escalate to NPCI
If the in-app complaint and bank complaint go nowhere after a few days, escalate to the National Payments Corporation of India — the body that governs UPI.
- Call toll-free: 1800-120-1740
- Or file online through the NPCI Dispute Redressal portal
You will need the UPI transaction ID, your bank account details, the recipient’s UPI ID, the amount, and the transaction date. Keep all of this ready before you call.
Step 4: RBI Integrated Ombudsman
If 30 days pass without a satisfactory response from your bank, escalate to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman. Banks take these complaints seriously.
- File online at cms.rbi.org.in
- Or call the toll-free helpline: 14448
This is the point where formal regulatory pressure enters the picture. It will not recover money the recipient has spent, but it does compel the bank to formally account for how they handled your complaint.
What If the Recipient Refuses to Return It?
This is where options narrow. If someone knowingly keeps money sent to them by mistake and refuses to return it, the remaining routes are legal: a civil suit for recovery, or in some cases a police complaint for wrongful retention. For larger amounts it is worth talking to a lawyer. For small sums, most people do not pursue it this far — but knowing the option exists matters.
How Long Does Recovery Take?
When the recipient agrees to return the money, expect 3–10 business days to clear back into your account. Bank-level escalations can stretch to 30 days. NPCI and Ombudsman routes take longer still. Following up every few days with your reference number keeps your case from sitting idle.
Document Everything Right Now
Screenshot the transaction immediately. Note the UPI ID, amount, timestamp, and reference number. If you contact the recipient asking for the money back, save those messages. If this ever reaches an Ombudsman complaint or a court, a clear paper trail is what makes the case.
