Sent Money to the Wrong Account on PhonePe or Paytm? Here’s How to Get It Back

Accidentally Sent Money to the Wrong UPI Account? Start Here

The moment you realise the transfer went to the wrong place, take a screenshot of the transaction confirmation. That screen has the UTR number — a 12-digit reference ID — and it is the one piece of information every bank, app, and authority will ask you for. Everything else can wait 30 seconds; this cannot.

Step 1: Raise an In-App Dispute — Before You Call Anyone

In PhonePe, go to Help & Support, find the transaction in your history, and select Raise a Dispute. In Paytm the path is Help > Passbook > tap the transaction. Both routes feed directly into NPCI’s centralised system called UDRM (UPI Dispute Redressal Mechanism), and you receive a reference number you can use to track progress.

A phone call to customer support creates no automatic paper trail. The in-app dispute does. Do that first.

Step 2: Notify Your Bank in Writing

While the app dispute is open, contact your bank — ideally in writing or by email so you have a timestamp. Your bank can formally request the recipient’s bank to reverse the transaction. They will need the UTR number, the amount, the date, and the UPI ID or phone number the money went to. Note the name of whoever you speak to.

Banks must acknowledge a wrong-transfer complaint. Getting your report on record early matters if things escalate later.

Step 3: Escalate to NPCI if Nothing Happens Within 15 Working Days

App and bank-level disputes typically resolve in 7–15 working days. If that window passes with no resolution, take the complaint to NPCI directly at npci.org.in. Under the UPI section, find the Dispute Redressal Mechanism and select the option for money incorrectly transferred to another account. You can also call NPCI’s toll-free helpline at 1800-120-1740.

NPCI assigns a new reference number and routes the complaint between the two banks involved. Resolution at this stage typically takes 15–30 working days. One thing to understand: NPCI does not move the money itself. It coordinates between banks, and the actual reversal still requires action from the recipient’s bank.

Step 4: The RBI Ombudsman — Last Resort, But Taken Seriously

If your bank has not resolved the complaint within 30 days, or gave you an answer you consider inadequate, you can file with the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in. It is free. Banks treat ombudsman complaints with more urgency than internal escalations, because the regulator is now involved.

The Difficult Reality About UPI Reversals

A completed UPI transaction cannot be reversed automatically. The money is already sitting in another person’s account. Getting it back requires either their voluntary cooperation or a formal directive. If the recipient agrees and sends it back, the matter is settled. If they refuse, the formal dispute chain above applies increasing pressure — but it is not instant.

Speed is the main lever you have. Raising a dispute early flags the transaction before the recipient can spend the funds and then deny receiving them.

A Word on Customer Care Numbers

Searching online for PhonePe or Paytm support numbers returns a large number of unofficial and fraudulent listings. The official PhonePe helpline is 080-68727374 — verify this by going to the Help section inside the app itself rather than trusting a number from a search result or a forum post. Calling a fake helpline wastes time and can expose you to a second scam where someone posing as support asks for your UPI PIN or OTP.

What to Have Ready Before You File Anything

  • UTR number or UPI transaction reference ID
  • Exact date and time of the transfer
  • Amount sent
  • The UPI ID or mobile number you accidentally sent to
  • Screenshot of the successful transaction screen

Having all five ready before you open the first dispute form cuts the back-and-forth significantly at every stage of the process.
