Wrong UPI Transfer? How to Get Your Money Back from PhonePe or Paytm
UPI payments go through instantly. Once sent, you cannot cancel them on your own — the money needs the recipient’s agreement to come back. That is the fundamental challenge, and understanding it early is what gets you moving through the right steps instead of the wrong ones.
Unofficial helpline numbers are a real risk
Phone numbers circulating on forums and in social media posts claiming to be PhonePe or Paytm support are frequently third-party services, some of which charge fees, and some are scams that harvest your banking details. PhonePe’s official support is the Help section inside the app and support.phonepe.com. Paytm’s support is similarly app-based. The only verified external helpline worth calling is NPCI’s toll-free number: 1800-120-1740.
Step 1: Report through the app — immediately
Open PhonePe or Paytm. Go to transaction history, find the wrong payment, and tap it. Look for a Help or Report a Problem option and file the complaint from there. Do not wait to do this in person at a branch or by email. The in-app complaint is already attached to your Unique Transaction Reference (UTR) number — which is what every bank and regulator will ask for — so filing in-app removes one layer of paperwork from every step after it.
Report within 24 to 48 hours if at all possible. The longer you wait, the more likely the recipient has already moved or spent the funds.
Step 2: Contact your bank
Call or visit your bank and ask them to raise a wrong credit chargeback. Have these ready before you call:
- Your UTR number — shown on the payment receipt or in the app’s transaction detail screen
- The exact amount, date, and time of the transfer
- The UPI ID or phone number you sent money to
Your bank contacts the beneficiary’s bank, which then asks the recipient to return the funds. Banks cannot force a reversal — receiver consent is mandatory under UPI rules. If the recipient agrees, the refund typically takes up to 7 days to reach you.
Step 3: File with NPCI
If the in-app complaint and bank request stall, go to the NPCI Dispute Redressal portal (crcs.npci.org.in) and file a formal complaint. The app provider — PhonePe, Paytm, or whichever platform you used — gets a short investigation window, usually a few days. If they do not resolve it, NPCI escalates to the payment service provider bank. Save the complaint reference number they give you; every subsequent escalation will ask for it.
You can also call NPCI directly: 1800-120-1740.
Step 4: RBI Digital Payments Ombudsman
Thirty days without a satisfactory resolution is the trigger for the final escalation. File a complaint through the RBI’s Consumer Education and Protection Department portal at cms.rbi.org.in. This is the highest level available to individual consumers. Banks respond meaningfully faster to a formal RBI Ombudsman case than to repeated calls or app tickets — the regulatory weight is different.
If the recipient refuses to return the money
Receiving money by mistake is legally unjust enrichment, and there is an obligation to return it. Enforcing that means a consumer court filing or a police complaint, which is slow but not hopeless. Document everything from the moment you spot the mistake: transaction screenshots, UTR, complaint reference numbers, dates of every call and ticket. That paper trail is what makes a legal case viable if it goes that far.
