How to Downgrade Claude Pro to the Free Plan Without Closing Your Account

The short answer: “Cancel” is the downgrade

Claude’s billing page doesn’t have a “Downgrade” button. Just “Cancel plan.” That trips people up, but canceling your Pro subscription doesn’t delete your account or erase anything. It schedules a revert to the free tier at the end of your current billing period. Your conversations, settings, and login all stay exactly as they are.

Steps to cancel on the web

Log into claude.ai in a browser. Click your name or profile initials in the bottom-left corner and open Settings. Navigate to the Billing tab. You’ll see your current plan with a “Cancel plan” option — click it, confirm when prompted, and you’re done. Pro access continues until the end of the paid period you’re already in.

If the billing page only shows an upgrade option and no Cancel button, scroll down. It sits lower on the page than you’d expect and is easy to miss at first glance.

If you subscribed through a mobile app

App store subscribers can’t cancel through the claude.ai billing tab at all. Apple and Google manage their own billing separately, so the Cancel button simply won’t appear there if you signed up via an app. You need to go through the store directly.

  • iOS: Settings → [Your name] → Subscriptions → Claude → Cancel Subscription
  • Android: Google Play → Profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Claude → Cancel

What you keep and what you lose

All your conversations stay. History, saved projects, account data — none of that disappears when you drop to the free plan. The account itself stays active.

What actually changes: the free tier has lower usage limits, so you’ll hit rate caps faster during long or heavy sessions. Priority access during peak hours is a Pro feature. The models available on the free tier may also differ — Anthropic doesn’t always extend new model access to free users at the same time as Pro subscribers.

A note on timing

Cancellation isn’t immediate. You keep Pro access until the billing cycle ends. No partial refunds for unused days, so there’s no real reason to rush — you’ve already paid for the rest of the period and will have Pro through it regardless of when you click cancel.

Re-subscribing later is straightforward. Your account and history will be right where you left them.
