Painting Your 5th-Gen Camaro RS Wheels Gloss Black: What Actually Holds Up

Skip the primer and you’ll regret it by spring

Gloss black wheels on a 5th-gen Camaro look like they belong there. The RS package’s factory silver or machined finish is fine stock, but going black completely changes the car’s stance — and it’s one of the more satisfying mods you can pull off at home for relatively little money. The problem is most people rush the prep and wonder why their paint is flaking six months later.

The process itself isn’t hard. It’s the sequence and patience that most DIY wheel paint jobs skip.

What you’ll need

You don’t need a compressor or a spray gun. Rattle cans do this job well when used correctly. Here’s the list:

  • Self-etching primer — one can typically covers all four wheels
  • Gloss black wheel paint: Dupli-Color High Performance Wheel Paint and Rust-Oleum High Performance Wheel Spray Paint are both well-regarded options
  • Wheel-specific clear coat (not regular trim clear — wheel formulas resist brake dust and heat up to around 250°F)
  • 80-, 150-, and 400-grit sandpaper
  • Wax and grease remover or a dedicated degreaser
  • Masking tape and painter’s plastic

Prep is the whole job

Clean the wheels thoroughly — soap and water first, then a degreaser. Brake dust bonds to the surface, and painting over it means that spot will bubble later.

Sand the existing finish starting with 80-grit to rough it up, then follow with 150-grit to smooth things out. Don’t skip sanding just because the factory finish looks smooth — paint won’t bond reliably to a polished surface. Wipe everything down with a clean degreaser rag after sanding and let it dry completely before you touch a can.

Mask off the tires. If you pull the wheels off the car — which is worth doing — cover the lug nut holes too.

Self-etching primer: the step that actually matters

This is the biggest differentiator between a wheel respray that lasts two years and one that’s peeling by December. Self-etching primer chemically bonds to bare metal or existing factory finish rather than just sitting on top of it. Two thin coats, letting each dry fully. Don’t try to wet-sand this layer.

Most tutorials either skip this step entirely or mention it in passing. It isn’t optional if you want the finish to survive heat cycles and winter driving.

Applying the paint

Shake the can for a full two minutes. Hold it 8 to 10 inches from the wheel. Thin, overlapping passes — resist the urge to pile on wet coats to get coverage fast, because that’s exactly how you get runs. Three or four thin coats beats two heavy ones every time.

Wait at least 15 to 20 minutes between coats. In cold weather, give it more. Paint won’t cure properly below about 50°F, and pushing it produces a finish that looks fine until it suddenly doesn’t.

Clear coat

Clear coat is what keeps the gloss alive against brake dust, road salt, and repeated washing. Use a wheel-specific clear, not leftover trim clear from another project. The formulas are meaningfully different. Two coats minimum, same thin-pass approach.

After the final coat, leave the wheels alone for at least 24 hours before remounting. Full cure takes closer to a week. Avoid pressure washers and aggressive wheel cleaners during that window.

Plasti-Dip vs. permanent paint

Plasti-Dip is worth considering if you’re not committed to the color or want something reversible. Applied in enough layers — usually five or more — it peels off cleanly and is more forgiving of imperfect prep. The downside is durability. Brake dust sticks to rubber-based coatings differently than it does to enamel, and the high-contact areas on the wheel face can start looking rough within a year of daily driving.

Permanent spray paint done right — with primer and a quality wheel clear — holds up significantly better and looks sharper close up. For a gloss finish you plan to keep, permanent wins. For a seasonal or experimental look, Plasti-Dip makes sense.

On the car vs. off the car

Most people do this with the wheels still mounted using careful masking. It works. But pulling the wheels gives you access to the back of the spokes, lets you sand every surface properly, and removes any risk of overspray landing on brake hardware. If you want a result that looks good from every angle, the extra hour is worth it.
