How to Downgrade Claude Pro to the Free Plan: What Actually Happens to Your Account
Cancel is the downgrade
Claude’s billing page doesn’t have a dedicated switch-to-free option. Canceling your Pro or Max subscription is how you get to the free tier — the account stays, only the paid plan ends. If you followed the downgrade link and landed on a page showing only Upgrade and Cancel, you’re in exactly the right place. Cancel is what you want.
How to cancel on the web
If you signed up through claude.ai or Claude Desktop, the steps are straightforward:
- Log in and click your initials or name in the lower-left corner.
- Select Settings.
- Go to the Billing tab.
- Click Cancel and confirm when prompted.
No support chat, no cancellation form. The button is right there.
If you subscribed on mobile
Mobile subscriptions route through Apple or Google — not Claude’s own billing page. The web cancel button won’t appear if you originally signed up through the app. You have to cancel through the same platform you used to subscribe.
- iOS: Tap your initials in the top-right corner, then Billing > Manage Subscription. Alternatively, go to iPhone Settings > your Apple ID > Subscriptions > Claude.
- Android: Tap your initials, then Billing > Manage Subscription, which routes through Google Play’s subscription manager.
This platform-specific routing trips people up. If the web billing page looks wrong, check which store you used when you first subscribed.
What stays when you cancel
Canceling removes the subscription, not the account. Short version: nothing is deleted.
- Conversation history
- Projects
- Artifacts and uploaded files
You can still log in after cancellation. Past conversations are fully accessible on the free tier, which is exactly what the original poster needed — keeping the account for reference works fine.
What actually changes
Free tier usage limits are noticeably lower. Daily message limits drop compared to Pro, and access to Claude’s most capable model versions is restricted. Extended context windows and priority access during peak periods are paid-tier features.
For light or occasional use, the free tier is functional. For heavy daily use, the reduction is significant.
When cancellation kicks in
Not immediately. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period. You keep full Pro access until then. If you want to avoid being charged for another cycle, cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date — that’s Anthropic’s stated cutoff.
Reactivating later
You can resubscribe at any time. No waiting period, no reactivation fee. Your conversation history and projects stay on the account regardless of how long you’re on the free tier. That makes canceling fairly low-stakes if you just need a break or want to cut costs for a while.
