Chevrolet Impala PCM Profiles: How to Read, Share, and Decode Your Calibration

What a PCM Profile Actually Is

The term “PCM profile” gets thrown around loosely on car forums, but it usually means one of two things: the calibration file stored in your Impala’s Powertrain Control Module, or the human-readable summary that tuning software generates when you connect and read the module. These are not the same thing, and which one you want matters when you’re asking someone to share it.

The calibration is the actual data — fuel tables, spark maps, transmission shift points, speed limiters, rev limiters, commanded AFR targets. The OS (operating system) sits underneath it and rarely changes. When a tuner shares a “profile,” they’re almost always sharing the calibration layer on top of an unmodified or lightly touched OS.

Reading the Calibration: HP Tuners vs EFILive

Two tools dominate GM PCM work: HP Tuners and EFILive. Both read the Impala’s PCM over the OBD-II port. The process is straightforward either way.

HP Tuners

Connect the MPVI interface, open VCM Suite, select your vehicle, and hit Read. The software pulls the full calibration and saves it as an .hpt file. You’ll see the OS ID, calibration ID, and VIN right at the top of the file info panel. Sharing is as simple as posting that .hpt — anyone with HP Tuners can open it.

EFILive

In EFILive’s Tune Tool, choose Read then Calibration only (unless you also need the OS). This saves a .tun file. When you open it, the header shows the OS version, calibration ID, and VIN. EFILive also has a Show PCM Info option that works directly from the connected module — useful for a quick confirmation without doing a full read-to-file.

One thing that catches people off guard: if a PCM was previously locked by HP Tuners, EFILive may not be able to read it back. It can overwrite the calibration, but not read the locked data. This is a common source of confusion when swapping tools mid-project.

Impala-Specific Notes

Generation matters. A lot.

The 10th-gen Impala (2014–2020) with the 3.6L V6 uses an E92 ECM, which is well-supported by both HP Tuners and EFILive. Trifecta Performance also offers off-the-shelf calibration profiles for it if a full custom tune isn’t the goal — their Advantage package targets fuel economy and driveability improvements without requiring any tuning hardware on your end.

Older Impalas use much earlier hardware. The 1996 B-body Impala SS with the LT1 runs a simpler PCM that older tools like TunerCat and TunerPro handle well. That ECM is shared across several GM platforms from the same era, so tune resources and community-shared calibrations aren’t hard to track down.

If whoever built the tune used a mail-order service, that service almost always retains the base file and can resend it on request. Worth asking before anything else — saves the hassle of a full re-read if the car isn’t nearby.

What to Look For Once You Have the File

A few tables tell you the most about what was actually changed:

  • VE (Volumetric Efficiency) tables — the fuel side. Stock VE with only spark changes tells you something about the tuner’s approach and how conservative they were.
  • Spark advance tables — compare these against known stock values for the same OS version to see what was pulled or added at which load and RPM points.
  • Speed and rev limiters — commonly adjusted even in mild street tunes, sometimes overlooked when reviewing a file.
  • Transmission parameters — shift points, shift firmness, TCC lockup threshold. These get skipped a lot but can dramatically change how the car feels day to day.

Both HP Tuners and EFILive include diff tools that compare two calibration files cell-by-cell and flag anything that changed. If you have a known-stock calibration for the same OS version, running a diff is far faster than scrolling through tables manually.
