Sent Money to the Wrong Account on PhonePe or Paytm? Here’s How to Get It Back
UPI Transactions Are Instant — But You Still Have Options
Sending money to the wrong UPI account is stressful, and the instant-settlement design of UPI makes it feel final. It isn’t always. There is a structured path to follow, and how quickly you move in the first hour matters a lot.
Before Anything Else: Note the Transaction Details
Open the app and find the transfer. Write down the exact amount, date and time, the recipient’s UPI ID or mobile number, and the UTR (Unique Transaction Reference) number. Every complaint you file downstream will ask for these.
In PhonePe, tap the transaction in History and use the share icon to save a summary. In Paytm, go to Passbook, find the transfer, and screenshot the details page.
Step 1: Raise a Dispute Inside the App
This is the most important first move — not hunting for a helpline number.
In PhonePe: go to Help & Support → UPI / Bank Transfer → Incorrect recipient and raise a ticket. Save the ticket ID you receive. In Paytm: go to Help Centre → Transaction Issues and follow the prompts for a wrong transfer.
The ticket creates an official paper trail. PhonePe or Paytm forwards this to the recipient’s bank. Without it, nothing else moves.
Step 2: Call Your Own Bank
Call the customer care number on the back of your debit card and report a UPI transfer to the wrong account. Ask them to log a dispute and record the reference number they give you. Banks can reach the recipient’s bank through interbank settlement channels — this sometimes moves faster than waiting on app support alone.
Step 3: Escalate to NPCI
If the app and your bank haven’t moved in a couple of days, contact NPCI directly. The toll-free helpline is 1800-120-1740. You can also raise a complaint through npci.org.in. Have your UTR number, amount, date, and bank details ready. Standard resolution time is 3–5 working days once a case is properly logged.
Step 4: RBI Banking Ombudsman — the Final Escalation
If 30 days have passed without resolution, file with the RBI’s Complaint Management System at cms.rbi.org.in. It’s free. The helpline is 14448. The RBI Ombudsman covers wrong UPI debits under the Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme (RB-IOS), updated in July 2026.
The ombudsman can award compensation. Earlier steps can’t. That’s the practical difference.
Watch Out for Fake Helpline Numbers
Search results are full of unofficial “PhonePe customer care” numbers that route to scammers, not support staff. PhonePe’s verified official customer care is 080-68727374. If a number you found online doesn’t match, don’t call it. And never share your UPI PIN, OTP, or card number with anyone on the phone claiming to be from PhonePe or Paytm — the real support team will never ask for those.
What If the Recipient Refuses to Return the Money?
This is where things get genuinely harder. Banks can request a voluntary reversal from the recipient’s account, but they cannot force a debit without consent or a court order. If the recipient refuses, your options are:
- File a police complaint for fraud using the transaction record — the bank can be compelled to provide account holder details under a court order
- Escalate to the RBI Ombudsman, which puts regulatory pressure on the recipient’s bank
- File a case at the consumer forum or civil court for smaller amounts
If the recipient cooperates, most cases settle within a week. If they don’t, expect a longer process involving more paperwork.
Paytm Wallet vs. Bank Transfer — One Difference Worth Knowing
If you sent money to a Paytm wallet rather than a linked bank account, Paytm has more direct control over the reversal and can sometimes process it faster. When raising the complaint inside Paytm, specify it was a wallet transfer, not a bank transfer. The resolution path is shorter.
